The AgDataHub Board of Directors Approves the Transition to Public Governance
September 23rd, 2024
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty announced that the company AgDataHub will transition to public governance. This measure aims to strengthen technological sovereignty and the security of agricultural and food data, while simplifying administrative procedures, supporting innovation, and optimizing public policies. AgDataHub is one of the first “Lighthouse Projects” of Gaia-X and continues to show strong development.
During its meeting on July 10, 2024, the Board of Directors approved this transition, which solidifies the data-sharing infrastructure, thus ensuring the protection and enhancement of French farmers’ data. This initiative is part of the “Digital and Data” roadmap of France Nation Verte/Ecological Planning, unveiled in December 2023. It addresses the need for administrative simplification expressed during the recent agricultural crisis, while supporting the economic and environmental objectives of the agricultural and agri-food sectors.
AgDataHub perfectly illustrates data space projects that comply with Gaia-X and support concrete sectoral and operational challenges. “AgDataHub’s role is to interconnect 400,000 farms with their 85,000 partners in France. On a European scale, we will have to interconnect, in Belgium, the Netherlands, Finland, and all EU member states, over 10 million farms with 500,000 partners. That is our goal,” said Sébastien Picardat, CEO of AgDataHub.
Thanks to this decision, France is equipping itself with a sovereign data-sharing infrastructure, compliant with European regulations, allowing agricultural actors to maintain control over their data within the industries. The first use cases for this data-sharing initiative will be deployed by the end of 2024, covering topics such as traceability, carbon footprint, pesticide reduction, AI for logistics, labeling, animal genetics, the beef industry, biofuels, agroecology, the wine sector, and more.
Finally, this new public governance reinforces AgDataHub’s role as the coordinator of the European agricultural and food data space on behalf of the European Commission.
