Focus on Gaia-X Hub Germany

15 janvier 2025

Jan Fischer, Head of the Gaia-X Hub Germany, introduces us to the work of the Hub and gives us an insight into the plans for 2025 to support the development of data ecosystems in Germany and Europe.

Since its foundation in spring 2020, the Gaia-X Hub Germany is the national contact point for all those involved in data exchange in open data ecosystems. Our goal is to support the development of an international data economy in line with European values and economic structures.

The Gaia-X Hub promotes the development and use of Gaia-X in Germany. As a stakeholder forum, we bring together representatives from science, business, politics and society to exchange experiences, gain insights and implement them together.

The German Hub is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology and located at acatech, the German Academy of Science and Engineering.

Scientific monitoring of funding projects

Since the beginning of 2022, we have been providing scientific support to the eleven projects of the Gaia-X funding competition of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. To this end, we regularly publish articles on data economics and Gaia-X, and collect insights from the funded projects on the implementation of the Gaia-X specifications in various working groups. We call these groups “Implementation Forums”. They are based on the building blocks of the Data Spaces Support Center (DSSC) and were previously only accessible to the consortia of the eleven funded projects.

Working groups for users from 15 industries

At the German hub, interested parties and experts from politics, business, science and society are organized in fifteen industry-specific working groups, the domains. They represent the user perspective of the Gaia-X initiative in Germany. In the domains, our members discuss, analyze and evaluate use cases, projects and funding plans. They consolidate the requirements of different sectors and industries for a common European data ecosystem.

Our plans for 2025

With the end of the Gaia-X funding competition in March 2025, the tasks and priorities of the German Hub will also change. Based on online surveys and expert interviews with our members, the German Hub will focus on two areas starting next year:

  1. We offer onboarding in data economics and Gaia-X as well as advanced topics and enable newcomers to actively participate in the community.
  2. We offer access to the Gaia-X and data space community and a productive community experience.

To this end, we are transforming our organizational structure into a content-based stakeholder journey and aligning our activities more closely across sectors. For example, we plan to create a training section on our website, inspired by the French hub (thank you for your great work 🙏🏻).

In the future, our community work will focus even more on advanced members and topics. We are working closely with experts to create important suggestions and relevant content for the community.

Our goal is to develop the Gaia-X Hub Germany into a technology-agnostic national contact point and content hub for decentralized data infrastructures, ecosystems and data economy.

NOTE from the Hub France: Jan Fischer has shared documents titled “Hubdate Infobriefing” for the 4th quarter 2024,  which further elaborates on Jan’s points above. You can access it through this link.
