"Generative AI: Unite or Endure" – For a Pragmatic Data Strategy

November 7th, 2024

The Digital New Deal think tank, in partnership with Medef, has just published a new report on generative AI, which includes proposals aimed at preserving the sovereignty and competitiveness of European industries.

The full report is available here. It will soon be available in English.

It follows the Position Paper published by Gaia-X Hub France last May.

The report Generative AI: Unite or Endure proposes a pragmatic strategy, based on enriching AI models with companies’ data.

Among the report’s key proposals is the promotion of Data Spaces and operational frameworks, notably Gaia-X.

“American studies observe an emerging need for harmonized data layers essential to the development of generative AI, and they note that Europe has taken a lead thanks to its Data Spaces initiatives stemming from the Data Governance Act (data-sharing infrastructures with sector-specific governance). The report proposes leveraging this second competitive advantage and making these trusted data ecosystems the foundation of a trusted generative AI (high-performing, sovereign, and ethical).”

The report highlights the importance of data governance in the development of generative AI. Gaia-X plays a central role by providing the necessary framework for European companies’ data to enrich AI models while controlling permissions and uses. This approach ensures not only competitiveness but also GDPR compliance, allowing Europe to establish itself as a leader in trusted, ethical, and transparent generative AI.

By facilitating data sharing and utilization within Data Spaces, Gaia-X paves the way for collaborative, cross-sectoral innovation. For instance, data generated in the energy sector could have significant applications in mobility or healthcare. This type of synergy not only maximizes data use but also enriches generative AI algorithms with high-quality insights.

The report from Digital New Deal and Medef underscores a clear imperative: to build high-performing, independent generative AI, Europe must leverage its own resources and infrastructures. By placing Gaia-X at the core of this strategy, the authors propose a model of digital sovereignty where European companies’ data is protected and valued. Gaia-X is not only an infrastructure but a vision of what the digital Europe can become: a trusted, collaborative, and innovative space where generative AI can develop sustainably and ethically.
